About This Guide

TUCC.org is an independent heritage guide to the Black church tradition in America — its history, its historic sanctuaries, the art of its preaching, its gospel music, and its role as the heart of community life. We tell that story the way a good museum tells one: gallery by gallery, in the third person, as heritage.

We are not a church. We hold no services and represent no congregation. In particular, this guide is not affiliated with, and does not represent, Trinity United Church of Christ or any church, congregation or denomination. When we write about a historic congregation, a preacher or a movement, we write about them as heritage and history — never as if we were them.

Our aim is simple: to help heritage travellers, gospel-music lovers and readers of history understand and appreciate one of the most important institutions in American life, and to point the way to the places where that story can still be seen and heard.

Begin with The Black Church: An American Heritage, walk the six galleries from the guide contents, or find a sanctuary on the Atlas.
