Scholarship Information
OVERVIEW ONLY

  • Applicants can apply for only one (1) scholarship
  • Applicants must submit current official transcripts and test scores with application.
  • Late and/or incomplete applications cannot be considered.
  • All essays must be typed double-spaced, using 12 pt. font size
  • Applicants MUST be members of Trinity for at least one year AND submit verification of participation in a Trinity ministry for at least one year.

  • Applicants or family representatives must be present on Scholarship Sunday, June 8, 2008 and register with the Scholarship Ministry in the Chapel no later than 1:15 p.m.
  • Students may reapply for select scholarships as individually described, dependent upon maintenance of a “B” GPA or better

Rev. Barbara J. Allen Scholarship “For Such a Time as This!”
For students returning to college after an extended absence. This is a one-year scholarship renewable annually for three (3) years “B” grade average needed for renewable consideration.

  • Must be 35 years or older
  • Current official transcripts
  • 2008 Ministry Verification Form
  • Must have completed at least one course and registered to continue at an accredited college or university….please submit registration data.
  • Submit a 300-400 word essay responding to the topic: “My Pursuit of Education and how it will/does affect the Church Family and the African American Community”

Dr. Manford J. Bryd, Jr. Award
For college sophomore to graduate student level. This is a one-year scholarship, renewable annually for three (3) years “B” grade average needed for renewal consideration.

  • 300-500 word essay on The Black Value System
  •  (2) Letters of recommendation from:
    1. Your school counselor or advisor
    2. Adult member of Trinity UCC
  • Current official college transcript

Lucille Ellison/Kathryn Brown Memorial Scholarship
For high school graduates. (Consideration will be given to those students with less than a “B” average)

William and Retza Gise Family Scholarship
This scholarship is being offered to celebrate exemplary community service by a graduating high school senior with less than a “B” average. The family hopes this recipient will use the funds to buy a computer for college. This is not a renewable scholarship.

  • Acceptance letter from a four-year college or university
  • Two (2) Letters of recommendation from teacher or counselor and adult member of Trinity

Cheryl Guyton Memorial Scholarship
For high school seniors with a “B” (3.0) average or above and submits an ACT score of 26 or better, or an SAT score of 1260 or better.

  • Current official transcript and current test scores
  • Copy of acceptance letter from college or university you plan to attend
  • Two (2) Letters of recommendation from:
    1. Your principal or counselor, and Director of the community organization(s) in which you serve
  • 2008 Ministry Verification Form
  • Personal statement outlining your personal life goals and objectives. Write a paragraph about something that interests you along with an activity or program you are involved in.

Joseph W. Evans “Struggling Artist” Memorial Award
For artists: (in areas including drawing, painting and photography) grades 9 through college level. Student must have community involvement. Student may reapply for this scholarship, depending upon current grade level.

  • A 250-word essay on artistic interests, goals and aspirations
  • Three (3) examples of your work (will be returned)
  • Two (2) Letters of recommendation from:

Dr. Jeffrey P. Radford Memorial Scholarship
For music majors: undergraduate or graduate level. This scholarship is in honor and recognition of Dr. Radford’s 30 years of consecrated and devoted service at Trinity United Church of Christ, Chicago. It will be used to recognize, encourage and support academic achievement and personal development to the ministry of music in the Christian church.

  • Must provide documentation of honors and extracurricular awards in music

For graduating high school senior, African American Male, ranking 21 or lower in his class, accepted into a mechanical, electrical or structural engineering undergraduate program, preferably at a Historically Black College or University.

Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. / Deacon Don Moody Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes individuals, 18 and older, who have knowledge of the 12-Step Program and desire to further their education and rehabilitation in drug and/or alcoholism. Prospective recipients must commit to give back to the ministry by taking calls that come into the church regarding information on placement or work related to the 12-Step Program. This is a one-year scholarship, renewable annually for three years.

  • Three (3) sealed letters of recommendation from a teacher, a counselor, and alderperson or other community leader as to why applicant should be considered for this scholarship.
  • Copy of acceptance letter from college/university applicant plans to attend
  • Current official transcript
  • 300 word essay/bio addressing:
    Yourself and family relating to addiction, why should you receive this scholarship and your long-term goals after graduation.

Swanegan Memorial Teacher’s Scholarship
For education majors at the undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate level; students may reapply for this scholarship depending upon current educational level.

  • 300 word essay on: “No Child Left Behind: Legislation and Its Impact on African American Children in Urban Education Settings.”

Dr. Mary Henderson Wright Scholarship
For graduating female high school seniors who plan to major in mathematics or education that will honor and recognize the dedicated commitment to Christian beliefs exemplified by the lifetime achievements of Dr. Wright, who was a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

  • 300-word essay addressing:  “What legacy would you like to leave to your family and community?”
  • Copy of acceptance letter/ registration in a four-year college or university
  • Current official transcripts and test scores
  • Three (3) Letters of recommendation from: a teacher, an adult member of Trinity UCC, and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

For students enrolled in accredited seminaries. This is a one-year scholarship, renewable annually for three years.

  • One (1) Letter of recommendation from your seminary professor/counselor
  • 300 word essay expressing how seminary education has enhanced your call to ordained Ministry

For students enrolled in an ATS accredited seminary. This is a one-year scholarship, renewable for three years. This scholarship is offered in honor and recognition of the personal development and fidelity to Christian beliefs held by Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr. Individuals applying for this scholarship must be active in the community.

  • Must maintain a grade point average of “B” (3.0) or above
